This photo shows a somewhat darker view than it was in reality, although you could still easily see the rays of sunlight, but I do kind of like the effect you get with this view.

The first line of a self-introduction is by far the hardest to write, so I will keep it short and sweet with “Hi, I’m a Simon Barker too”. I’m quite glad Simon has created this “Are You Simon Barker?” section of his site and invited me to write for it because whenever I do a vanity Google of myself to check nothing onerous has appeared, this is the website I always find. In some ways that is a good thing, but, when people are trying to find me, it is definitely an issue.
I was born in 1987 in Clacton on Sea and since then I have migrated, via Sheffield for a spell at boarding school, up to Newcastle Upon Tyne to attend university. I managed to get a B.Eng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering tucked under my belt by the summer of 2008 and, at the time of the financial meltdown, that autumn I was happily starting my PhD in the same topic. I would love to say that it was fantastic foresight of mine to avoid trying to get a job at the start of the recession but, in reality, I love engineering and a PhD had my name written all over it.

When you get so many emails as I do, especially mass-mailed ones, it’s quite often tough to stand out and get your attention, however Sports Interactive have certainly managed to do that with their latest email about their Football Manager Live game.
It’s an online multiplayer game I played for a few months a couple of years back based on the highly popular Football Manager series, since I left, I’ve had a few emails with offers to come back (as you often do with subscription services you’ve left), but this is the first email that has really caught my attention and made me read the full thing – which is surely the first thing that you want when sending an email…

I have to say that there aren’t that many things that really annoy me in daily life, I mean I try to be a fairly easy going kind of guy most of the time, however, if there’s one thing that has the potential to annoy me, it has to be car parking in Hambleton, North Yorkshire, particularly in Thirsk and Northallerton!
Now admittedly I do have a history of sticking to my principles, especially when it comes to car parking, for instance, it’s not unknown of me to drive 15 miles to a local town, get frustrated with not being able to find a car parking space for over 15 minutes and then drive 40 miles in the opposite direction to an ‘out of town’ shopping centre where I know that they’ll be plenty of free parking spaces available.
Perhaps in the future people should not try and support their local town and simply go to the out of town shopping centre instead? That being the case, if you were the council responsible for decisions around parking, what would you do to help encourage business in your local rural market towns?
Perhaps replace a free parking system that allowed local people to park for up to 2 hours for free, with a paid one? Hmmm, perhaps not, I wouldn’t do that either, but clearly, the people in charge don’t think like this.

Well I know that I’m Simon Barker, but I’m guessing there’s lots of other Simon Barker’s out there too, so in a similar way to Dave Gorman’s “Are You Dave Gorman” book where he went around the world meeting up with other namesakes, I’m thinking that it would be good to ‘virtually’ meet other Simon Barker’s here on my blog.
I’m thought this would be best done in a guest blog post kind of way, perhaps someone searching the Internet for a Simon Barker and arriving here at SimonBarker.com doesn’t specifically find the one they were looking for right now, such as those looking for Simon Barker – @SimonBarker87.
